Cat. No. 480
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. For operation: Grasp the instrument, depress and hold the ON/OFF button.
Adjust the zero control knob until the instrument needle reads exactly on
zero. The instrument is now zero balanced and ready for use. Metal objects
placed near the back of the instrument will cause the needle to swing
up scale.
2. To locate outlets in underfloor duct: Depress and hold the ON/OFF but-
ton. Slide the instrument over the floor area. When the instrument is directly
over the duct, a small reading will be observed; and when centered directly
over the outlet in the duct, a peak reading will be observed. Little difficulty is
experienced in distinguishing between the duct and the outlet.
3. To locate plastered over or otherwise covered outlet boxes: The pro-
cedure is essentially the same. With the instrument balanced to read on zero,
move the instrument over the wall or ceiling area. When directly over the out-
let, the needle will swing sharply up scale. If metal lath is encountered, zero
out the reading caused by it and observe the peak reading when directly
over the outlet.
4. Maintenance of instrument: With reasonable care, your transistorized
locator will give years of trouble free use. It is unlikely that the transistor will
become defective during the life of the instrument. In case of difficulty,
remove the panel on back of the instrument and make sure the flashlight cell
which powers the instrument is properly seated into the clips provided.
Replace with a new cell if necessary. Power consumed by the instrument is
very small and a cell can be expected to give service for a year or more.
NOTE: Do not leave old worn out batteries in the instrument where they may
burst or leak causing damage to the other parts.
